Absheron Gas Field Expansion: Owners, Capacity and Timeline
Last updated: September 30, 2026
The Absheron Full Field Development is a major offshore gas and condensate expansion in Azerbaijan’s sector of the Caspian Sea, for which operator TotalEnergies and partners SOCAR and XRG (ADNOC’s international investment arm) took a Final Investment Decision (FID) on September 26, 2026. The expansion is designed to roughly quadruple gas output from the field, lifting production to 6 billion cubic meters a year (bcma) of gas and 47,000 barrels per day of condensate, with first gas from the expanded field targeted for 2029.

Ownership Structure
The Absheron field is developed under a production-sharing structure operated by TotalEnergies, which holds a 35% interest alongside an equal 35% stake for Azerbaijan’s state energy company SOCAR and a 30% stake for XRG, the international gas, LNG and chemicals investment vehicle that Abu Dhabi’s ADNOC launched in 2024. XRG already held a 30% stake in the field’s first production phase and is increasing its exposure with the full-field expansion, part of a broader push by XRG into gas assets in the Caspian region alongside recent moves into the US, Venezuela and Argentina. TotalEnergies operates the field on behalf of all three partners.
Technology & Scale
Absheron sits in the Caspian Sea about 100 km southeast of Baku and holds an estimated 140 billion cubic meters of recoverable gas. First production began in 2023 through a single subsea well, currently producing 1.5 bcma of gas and 12,000 bbl/day of condensate. The full-field development sanctioned in September 2026 adds further subsea wells tied back through a multiphase pipeline — reported by SOCAR at roughly 140 km in length — to onshore processing facilities at the Sangachal Terminal, lifting total field capacity to 6 bcma of gas and 47,000 bbl/day of condensate. TotalEnergies has stated the project’s operating emissions intensity is expected to stay below 4 kg of CO2 equivalent per barrel of oil equivalent.
Financing & Offtake
Neither the total investment value nor a dedicated financing package for the full-field development had been disclosed by the partners as of the FID announcement. On the offtake side, the expanded volumes are earmarked for both Azerbaijan’s domestic market and export to Turkey. In June 2026, SOCAR, TotalEnergies and XRG signed a gas sales agreement with Turkey’s state pipeline operator BOTAŞ covering more than 4 bcma of gas a year once the expansion is on stream, with roughly half of that volume directed to Turkish consumers. Turkey-bound gas is expected to move through the existing South Caucasus Pipeline, TANAP and onward corridor infrastructure that Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz field has long used to reach Turkey and, via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, European markets — meaning the Absheron expansion adds volume to an established export route rather than requiring new cross-border pipeline capacity.
Timeline & Status
- 2023 — Absheron’s first production phase comes on stream through a single subsea well (1.5 bcma gas, 12,000 bbl/day condensate).
- June 2026 — SOCAR, TotalEnergies, XRG and BOTAŞ sign a gas sales agreement for the expansion’s Turkey-bound volumes.
- September 26, 2026 — TotalEnergies, SOCAR and XRG take the Final Investment Decision for the Absheron Full Field Development at the Azerbaijan International Investment Forum in Baku.
- 2026 onward — Additional subsea wells and onshore processing facilities move from FID into development and construction; no EPC contractor had been publicly named at FID.
- 2029 (targeted) — Full-field production starts, lifting Absheron output to 6 bcma of gas and 47,000 bbl/day of condensate.
TDE will update this page’s status field and timeline as TotalEnergies, SOCAR and XRG confirm EPC awards, construction milestones and any financing announcements.
Why It Matters
Absheron is one of two major non-Shah Deniz gas developments SOCAR is advancing to sustain Azerbaijan’s role as a gas supplier to both its domestic market and Turkey, at a time when the Azerbaijan-Turkey-Europe corridor has taken on added strategic weight as the EU looks to diversify away from Russian pipeline gas. For XRG, increasing its stake in Absheron’s expansion is a concrete step in its stated strategy of building a global gas and LNG portfolio outside the UAE — following recent moves into US LNG, Turkmenistan gas and other international assets — while TotalEnergies extends a Caspian gas position it has held for more than two decades. The project is also a live test of how quickly a sanctioned Caspian gas expansion can move from FID to first gas, and whether Absheron volumes ultimately mostly stay in Turkey or move further west through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.
