Ruwais Diyab Unconventional Gas Development: Owner, Capacity and Timeline
Last updated: November 4, 2026
The Ruwais Diyab Unconventional Gas Development is ADNOC’s first large-scale unconventional gas project, sanctioned via a Final Investment Decision (FID) that the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company announced on November 2, 2026 at the ADIPEC 2026 conference. The onshore Abu Dhabi development is designed to deliver 345 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of raw gas starting in 2029, with ADNOC saying output could scale up to 1 billion standard cubic feet per day (Bcfd) over time, across a planned 25-year production life.

Ownership & Delivery Structure
ADNOC Onshore operates the Ruwais Diyab concession and carried out the technical studies, field testing and subsurface analysis that underpinned the FID. TotalEnergies — ADNOC’s partner on several other Abu Dhabi upstream gas and offshore projects, including the Ghasha concession — holds a minority interest in Ruwais Diyab, but neither company has published the current ownership split. Secondary trade-press reports on the split conflict with one another (figures cited range from roughly a 60/40 ADNOC-TotalEnergies division to a much larger ADNOC majority), so TDE is not citing a specific percentage split until ADNOC or TotalEnergies confirms one on the record. ADNOC says it will deliver the project under a design-build-operate (DBO) model and apply AI-assisted drilling and well-completion methods, an approach the company says lowers development risk on a resource that is more complex to produce than the UAE’s conventional gas fields.
Technology & Scale
Unconventional gas is trapped in tight rock formations that require more intensive drilling and completion work than conventional reservoirs to produce economically. ADNOC has processed small volumes of unconventional gas at Ruwais Diyab since 2020, but the FID marks the shift from pilot-scale testing to a full commercial development. Gas from the site will be processed on site and fed into the UAE’s domestic gas network through new pipeline infrastructure. ADNOC has framed the project as serving two purposes: shoring up domestic gas supply as demand grows, and freeing up associated conventional gas volumes for the company’s expanding LNG export business, centered on the 9.6 mtpa Ruwais LNG terminal targeting commercial production in the second half of 2028. ADNOC has described Ruwais Diyab as part of the same integrated gas-growth strategy that underpins Ruwais LNG, though the company has stressed the two are separate investment decisions.
The FID follows a separate, earlier 2026 ADNOC decision to proceed with Phases 2 and 3 of a rich-gas processing expansion — which the company has called its largest-ever gas processing expansion — for which an EPC contract was awarded to Tecnimont, a subsidiary of Italy’s Maire. ADNOC says the UAE holds the world’s seventh-largest gas reserves, with 298 trillion standard cubic feet of conventional resources and a further 160 trillion standard cubic feet classified as unconventional; unlocking more of that unconventional resource has been a stated ADNOC priority for several years.
Domestic Supply and Energy-Security Context
The UAE sits on some of the world’s largest gas reserves, yet much of its conventional gas is “sour,” carrying high levels of hydrogen sulphide that make it costly to process. That is part of why the UAE has long relied on imported piped gas from Qatar via the Dolphin Energy pipeline and, more recently, on LNG cargoes to help meet winter power-demand peaks. Bringing new, more complex upstream gas resources like Ruwais Diyab into production is one way ADNOC is trying to narrow that gap without relying solely on imports, alongside the company’s wider gas-growth program and its push into LNG exports.
Timeline & Status
- 2020 — ADNOC begins processing small, pilot-scale volumes of unconventional gas at the Ruwais Diyab concession.
- 2026 (earlier in the year) — ADNOC takes FID on Phases 2 and 3 of a separate rich-gas processing expansion and awards the EPC contract to Tecnimont (Maire).
- November 2, 2026 — ADNOC announces the Final Investment Decision on the full-scale Ruwais Diyab Unconventional Gas Development at ADIPEC 2026 in Abu Dhabi.
- 2026 onward — Development activity follows the FID; ADNOC has not yet named an EPC contractor or disclosed a construction schedule.
- 2029 (targeted) — Production starts at 345 MMscfd of raw gas, with potential to scale toward 1 Bcfd over a planned 25-year production life.
TDE will update this page’s status field and timeline as ADNOC confirms EPC awards, construction milestones, financing details or the project’s exact ownership split.
Why It Matters
Ruwais Diyab is the clearest sign yet that ADNOC is moving its unconventional-gas ambitions from exploration into commercial-scale production, after several years of pilot testing. For a country that still imports gas despite sitting on some of the world’s largest reserves, unlocking tight-rock resources like Diyab offers a path to easing that import dependence without new cross-border infrastructure. The project also reinforces the link between ADNOC’s domestic gas-supply strategy and its LNG export ambitions: gas freed up domestically by Ruwais Diyab supports the volumes ADNOC needs to back long-term LNG offtake commitments out of Ruwais LNG and ADNOC’s wider international gas portfolio via XRG.
