Poland Launches $258 Million Subsidy for Home Battery Storage

Poland Launches $258 Million Subsidy for Home Battery Storage
Summary not found.

Poland’s Ministry of Climate and Environment has unveiled a new PLN 1 billion ($258 million) subsidy scheme for home battery and heat storage systems, with applications opening October 20 and running until October 1, 2027, or until the budget is exhausted. The program is separate from Poland’s existing Mój Prąd rebate scheme and targets households that already have, or are installing, small-scale solar or other renewable generation.

To qualify, applicants must be connected to the grid with a home solar or small renewable electricity system, and install a battery of at least 10 kWh with storage capacity equal to at least 2 kWh for every kilowatt-peak of installed solar. Heat storage tanks of at least 100 liters are also eligible. Grants cover up to 30% of eligible costs, with battery support capped at roughly PLN 800 ($206) per kWh. Total payouts are further capped depending on a household’s billing arrangement: up to PLN 16,000 ($4,126) for prosumers on net billing and up to PLN 8,000 ($2,063) for those still on the older net-metering system. Heat storage grants are capped at PLN 1,000 ($258), and applicants can claim an additional PLN 2,000 ($516) bonus if they install an EU-manufactured battery or hybrid inverter. Combined support per electricity connection point is capped at PLN 19,000 ($4,900).

A dedicated program, not an extension of Mój Prąd

Poland has previously supported home batteries mainly as an add-on within its long-running Mój Prąd rebate program, the sixth edition of which drew record demand, with around 74,000 of its applications seeking storage funding out of a total PLN 1.85 billion budget. The new scheme is structured instead as a dedicated storage program in its own right, following an earlier, smaller pilot phase funded through Poland’s National Recovery Plan that allocated about $28.9 million and supported just over 5,000 home battery installations. The ministry is aiming considerably higher this time: it wants more than 200,000 home storage systems installed by the end of 2027, up from roughly 150,000 already in place as of June 2026.

Why Poland is pushing storage specifically

Poland has one of Europe’s fastest-growing residential solar fleets, but rooftop PV without storage adds limited value to a grid that already curtails solar at midday; batteries let households shift their own solar output to evening use and reduce strain on local distribution networks during periods of high generation. The EU-manufacturing bonus is a deliberate push to steer homeowners toward European battery and inverter suppliers rather than the Chinese equipment that dominates the residential storage market today.

Part of a broader regional push on storage

The new Polish scheme lands as several European grid operators tighten rules around how storage and generation connect to the grid. Germany approved its own MaStR/MiSpeL market-integration rules for storage and EV charging points this month, and large-scale storage investment in Poland has continued separately from the residential push: Greenvolt began construction on a 2.4 GWh battery project in Poland with BYD as equipment supplier in September. Together, the moves suggest Polish and wider European policymakers see both utility-scale and residential batteries as necessary complements to a solar and wind buildout that is beginning to outpace what the grid can absorb without storage.

What’s not yet clear

The ministry has not published the specific application portal or documentation requirements ahead of the October 20 opening, and it is not yet clear how quickly the PLN 1 billion budget will be allocated given the scale of pent-up demand suggested by Mój Prąd 6.0’s storage uptake.
