Devon Energy Posts $1.6B Core Profit, Unveils 2027 Oil Growth Plan
Devon Energy reported third-quarter 2026 net earnings of $1.0 billion, or $0.88 per diluted share, the Oklahoma City-based shale producer said in results released after market close on November 5. Core earnings, which strip out one-off items, came in higher at $1.6 billion, or $1.42 per diluted share, according to the company’s earnings release filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
Cash Flow and Production Hold Steady
Devon (NYSE: DVN) generated $2.8 billion in operating cash flow during the quarter. On an adjusted basis, operating cash flow reached $3.5 billion and free cash flow totaled $2.0 billion. Combined oil, gas and natural gas liquids sales brought in $5.9 billion.
Total production averaged roughly 1.668 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, landing within the range the company had guided to earlier in the year. Net earnings came in below the $1.9 billion Devon posted in the second quarter of 2026, a decline the company’s quarterly filing attributes mainly to volume growth that quarter from its merger with Coterra Energy’s Delaware Basin assets, a one-time boost that did not repeat in the third quarter.
2026 Guidance Intact, 2027 Outlook Introduced
Devon kept its full-year 2026 production and spending guidance unchanged. Alongside the quarterly results, the company issued its first look at 2027: oil production growth of 1% to 3% on total capital spending of about $5.3 billion, a figure given on a pro forma basis for the pending sale of Devon’s Eagle Ford shale position. BP walked away from a $4.5 billion bid for those Eagle Ford assets earlier this year, and Devon’s latest release does not name the counterparty now expected to complete the divestment.
The 2027 framework signals a shift toward disciplined, low-single-digit oil growth rather than the faster volume expansion Devon pursued through its 2024 merger activity, as the company works to convert its enlarged Permian Basin and Anadarko Basin footprint into free cash flow.
Context: A Strong Quarter Across US Shale Producers
Devon’s report lands in the same week as ConocoPhillips’ third-quarter results, with both independents benefiting from crude prices that have stayed elevated for most of 2026 amid Middle East supply disruptions. Devon shares have traded on investor expectations for capital discipline and shareholder returns rather than output growth, a pattern reflected in the newly introduced 2027 plan.
